- A typical installation would be to have a "Goodnight" switch next to the bed in the master bedroom. This would turn "Off" all the lights around the house that were still "On" including the TV and it would then turn "On" the night perimeter alarm. During the night if someone arose out of bed, say your child needing to go to toilet, the motion detector that is mounted in the hall
would turn "On" the hall light (dimmed) because it knew it was in night mode.
If a fire were to break out during the night, it would sound the house alarm, turn "On" all the house lights and unlock the front door and turn "Off" all major appliances (stove, heaters, air-conditioning, etc) while notifying the alarm monitoring company of the situation.
-
You can integrate a switch by the door you exit the house by and have it turn "Off" all unnecessary lighting and appliances and then turn on the house alarm. It is also possible to set up scenarios where the house lights and appliances turn on and off to simulate someone being home.
-
It is possible to integrate the remote from the garage door opener into the home system. Opening the garage door will turn "Off" the house alarm, turn "On" lighting if it is after dusk and switch the audio system on to your favourite music for you to listen too.
-
Speech recognition is now mature enough to use in home automation, which can offer someone who is physically impaired the ability to control their surroundings. The spoken word can be used to switch lighting and appliances. If they are home alone and have a visitor they could see the visitor on a TV monitor, talk to them via the intercom and open the door simply by speaking the commands.
- Pressing DVD on a remote control would show that you wanted to watch a DVD. The system would turn on the power to the TV and switch it to video input. If the TV is a projector then it might lower the screen. The system would then turn on your DVD player and open the draw ready for you to insert the DVD. The audio system would be turned on and then switched to the DVD input. The curtains may close and the lights may dim but not go off completely leaving you sufficient light to walk around the room. Pressing play would start the DVD and dim the lights to your preferred setting. Pressing stop or pause will also bring the lights backup to the previous level.
